Helping Make Spigot Lodge Successful
Karl Burke places real value on the important role his team play in making the yard successful.
The whole team do a great job at caring for the horses individual needs and getting them to the races in the best possible form they can be.
Karl's eldest daughter Kelly has worked in the family business since she left school. Married in 2015 to ex conditional jockey Zander Voy. Kelly runs the office aswell as rides out every morning and regularly goes racing whether that's driving the box or saddling and looking after owners. She used to ride as an Amateur jockey where she had four winners from around fifty rides.
Lucy Burke has also worked for the family business since she left school. Lucy is very hands on in the yard and has a major roll. Lucy is in charge of feeding and nutrition a very important and complex part of the success of a racehorse. Lucy is a very good rider and helps back the yearlings she has also ridden winners as an amateur jockey.
Colin Brister, Ian McLelland & Steven Avery
Colin is in charge of the day to day running of the yard and staff and responsible for medicals and work along side our vet Philip Jones.
Ian has just joined the team, he has years of experience and knowledge having worked in racing since his teens. He is working with Colin Brister to manage the staff and supervise with the horses daily routine and care.
Steven Avery has joined our expanding team as head lad to work alongside Colin & Ian. Steven spent a long stint with Mark Tompkins and we think he will be a good asset to our growing team.
Pierre Burban has been with us many years as a French national he is in charge of the French Travel and accompanies our many runners that we have over in France. When at home Pierre rides out and helps out with checking round and medicals.
Clifford Lee joined us at the start of 2016 as a 7lb claimer having only ridden one winner, he had a sensational year last year notching up some big wins on Intense Tango & Felix Leiter and rode out his 7lb claim. He has not ridden much on the all weather over the winter to save his claim and will start the 2017 turf season with a 5lb claim. He has done very well and is looking forward to the season ahead.
Marike Bronke -
Marike is from Holland and has joined us this year and comes in three times a week to treat the horses.
Jack Smith and Liisi Hallik
Jack & Liisi are our longest serving members of staff and have been with is many years. Liisi is in charge on the yards and organised the yard team on a morning she also does the feeding with Lucy. Jack rides out and breaks the yearlings in aswell as being the Handy man about the yard.
Kathryn has been part of the team in different roles for almost twenty years with
a short break to have her twin girls. Kathryn has re-
Louise along with Kathryn rides out a couple of lots and helps Kelly with the day to Day running of the office.
Russell Harris & Patrick O'Hanlon -
With Jordan & Clifford flying through there claims we have two new 7lb apprentices for 2017.
Russell Harris has worked for us now for over a year and has recently got his licence out for us having a few rides on the all weather circuits. Russell works hard on his fitness and technique with the Jockey coaches and we are more than happy to give him the opportunity on the track.
Patrick O'Hanlon has only recently joined us from his native Ireland where he has had over fifty rides and gained a winner. Like many others he has made the move over to the England looking for more opportunities which will hopefully pay dividends this year.
Mark Simms has been with us for over four years and is currently taking his HGV test as he has been appointed one of our travelling head staff roles where he will be in charge of transporting and looking after horses while away racing. Also joining both Pierre and Mark in the travelling role is new recruit Monika Muller who has joined us this year after training herself in her homeland of Switzerland. Monika has also worked in France and has travelled a lot of Europe.
JORDAN VAUGHAN has been with us for a few years now as one of our apprentices and has ridden over 50 winners, he has been stable Star Quiet Reflection's groom and work rider since she arrived at the yard and has done a brilliant job with her. At the end of this season Jordan decided to retire from the saddle and take up a new role with our team. Jordan with the help of JETS qualified with his HGV licence and has now joined our team of Travelling head lads who are responsible for the horses when away from the yard.
